Public Sculpture

John's monumental sculpture Stonehenge 1, is located in a small city park at the corner of Edwin and West streets, in Pittsfield Massachusetts. There is free parking and the park is free to enjoy at any time.

Steel Sculpture

John's steel sculpture is best described as a modern welded assemblage from found and machined steel. Originally created from discarded farm implements, the steel work evolved to include scrap industrial steel and in many cases a more refined steel construction practice. Though common, his signature flat black finish wasn't exclusive to this work.

Painting

Starting seriously in the early 1960's, John's early paintings include modern abstracted land and cityscapes, and quickly transitioned to brutal abstract compositions in muted palettes. His early work is a thick impasto built up with masonry tools. His later paintings explore line shape and form through abstract acrylic works and softer forms such as figurative portraiture.

Poster Design

John's posters for cultural events all over the Berkshires are well known. From Jacob's Pillow to Tanglewood, Naumkeg to the Josh Billings run-a-ground, John's hand cut paper stencil designed prints were a local staple for decades. The rich history of Dr. Stritch's poster design work captures not only his distinct style, but a cultural time period in a beautiful region of the country.

Doctor

John Stritch started his professional career as a flight surgeon in the United States Armed Forces, where he was for a time stationed in England. Trained in medicine at Boston University, Dr. Stritch worked after his military discharge as a contract surgeon for the Esso company in Aruba, servicing employees, their families and the local population. Dr. Stritch traveled the world extensively before his mid 30's.

Artist

In 1964 John and his wife Jeanne moved to Hinsdale Massachusetts where he ceased his successful career as a surgeon, and settled into being a Sculptor and Painter, making modern abstract and bold designs in each medium. Later in John's artistic life he was known as a Poster Designer, creating posters for Berkshires events at Tanglewood, NaumKeg, the Mount, the Josh Billings Run-a-Ground and other \ regional cultural events.

Teacher

Through the later years of his life John taught students in the Berkshires, through workshops in the Pittsfield Public School system, Miss Hall's School, and the DeSisto School, where he was also the school Doctor. He considered coming back to medical practice toward the end of his life as a wonderful coming full circle, and fulfilling conclusion to a long career.

Biography- John Stritch: Obligation to Endure

My name is Andy, and I’m an art researcher currently researching the work of Dr. Stritch. I'm on the lookout for photographs of his work, and to learn where it might be now. In collaboration with his family I’m helping to gather photographs, to document his work, and to create an authenticated catalog for study and preservation.

I'm also hoping to find placements for a few significant sculptures- with a preference for public spaces and Museum or University collections.
